This issue typically occurs when there is an update patch released either from your antivirus or NordVPN, which can cause the NordVPN app to be suspended from the firewall. Making, the antivirus program start limiting the VPN app’s functionality.

We reached out to NordVPN support to ask for a solution to this error. They said it can be resolved in two ways:

First, by adding the app to the firewall exceptions list. Below, we have explained how to add NordVPN to the exceptions list in most antivirus programs.
Add a Program to the Windows Firewall Exception List
- Open Firewall Settings:

Add a Program to Third-Party Antivirus Firewall Exceptions
Norton Security
- Open Norton Security and go to Settings.
- Select Firewall > Program Control.
- Find the program in the list or click Add to locate the executable file.
- Set the access level to Allow and save the changes.
McAfee Antivirus
- Open McAfee and navigate to the Firewall section.
- Go to Internet Connections for Programs.
- Locate the program or add it manually if it’s not listed.
- Change its status to Full or Allow.
Avast Antivirus
- Open Avast and click Menu > Settings > General.
- Go to Firewall and then Application Rules.
- Click Add Rule and select the program’s executable file.
- Choose Allow or similar permissions for the program.
Kaspersky Internet Security
- Open Kaspersky and click Settings > Protection.
- Select Firewall and click Configure Rules.
- Add the program to the list and set its status to Allow.
Secondly, Reset the NordVPN App Using Diagnostics:
To reset the NordVPN app using Diagnostics, we first need to locate the NordVPN shortcut on our desktop. Right-click it and select “Open file location” to access the installation directory. From there, we open the folder corresponding to our current NordVPN version (e.g., 6.40.5.0
) and find the “Diagnostics” file. Double-clicking on it will launch the diagnostics tool, where we simply click “Reset app”.
Once it restarts, we’ll be prompted to log in again, which often resolves the authentication error.
