If you’re opening the Pokémon Go app today, checking your local Discord community, or scanning the Niantic Campfire radar, you might be wondering why you can’t find the newest bird on the block. The Ultra Unlock: Water Festival event is officially here, bringing the highly anticipated debuts of Arrokuda, Barraskewda, and the wonderfully bizarre Cramorant.
However, there is a catch: Cramorant does not spawn in the wild.
If you’re struggling to track down this unique Water and Flying-type Pokémon, don’t worry. I’ll walk you through the exact steps to add Cramorant to your collection before the event ends on August 24th.
How to Catch Cramorant in Pokémon Go
Because you can’t rely on wild spawns while walking around your neighborhood, you will need to take advantage of specific event features to catch Cramorant. You can try the following four methods:
1. Take a Daily Snapshot (The Easiest Method)
If you want a guaranteed encounter with minimal effort, this is your best route. Simply open your buddy screen and take an AR photo of your active Pokémon. Doing this will trigger a Cramorant photobomb once per day during the Water Festival event, directly leading to a catch encounter.
2. Hatch 5km Eggs
Clear out your egg inventory and start incubating! Cramorant is currently in the hatch pool for 5km eggs, but keep in mind that this only applies to eggs obtained during the event timeframe. Tip: To hatch eggs faster, make sure you have Adventure Sync enabled and linked to Apple Health or Google Fit on your device. This ensures your game tracks your walking distance even when your phone is locked in your pocket.
3. Win in the Go Battle League
If you enjoy trainer battles, you can earn Cramorant through PvP. Once you reach Rank 16 or higher in the Go Battle League, Cramorant becomes available as a random encounter reward. If you’re already grinding through your daily sets this season, this might be your most reliable farming method.
4. Unlock Go Pass Rewards
By simply playing the game and completing tasks, you will naturally progress through the Ultra Unlock: Water Festival Go Pass. You are guaranteed a Cramorant encounter when you reach Rank 30 on the free track.
If you decide to purchase the Deluxe Go Pass upgrade for $4.99 (using Apple Pay, Google Play balance, or your preferred payment method), you will earn additional guaranteed encounters at Rank 19 and Rank 30, plus a funny Starmie backpack for your avatar.
Cramorant Forms Explained: How to Switch in Battle
One of the main reasons everyone wants to catch Cramorant in Pokémon Go is its unique battle mechanics. It actually changes forms mid-battle, but there are a few rules you need to know to make it happen.
First, these form changes only happen in trainer battles (PvP). You will not see them when fighting in Gyms or Raids. Second, Cramorant must know and use either the Surf or Dive Charged Attacks to trigger the change. If yours knows Hydro Pump, you can use a Charged TM to switch its moveset.
Depending on how much HP your Cramorant has when you fire off the attack, it will trigger one of two forms:
- Gulping Form: If Cramorant uses Surf or Dive when its HP is high, it transforms into Gulping Form and gets an Arrokuda stuck in its mouth. If your opponent hits you with a Charged Attack while you are in this form, their defense will drop.
- Gorging Form: If Cramorant uses its attack when its HP is low, it transforms into Gorging Form (trying to swallow a Pikachu!). Taking a Charged Attack in this state causes your opponent’s attack to drop.
Is Shiny Cramorant in Pokémon Go?
If you’re hunting for a shiny, you can pause the grind. No, shiny Cramorant is not currently available in Pokémon Go.
It’s very common for Niantic to hold back shiny releases during a Pokémon’s initial debut. When its shiny variant eventually arrives in the game, you’ll immediately notice the difference—it trades its standard blue feathers for a very striking bright orange color palette.
Bonus: Don’t Forget to Catch Arrokuda!
While you’re working on finding Cramorant, make sure you don’t miss out on the other Water Festival debuts. You can catch Arrokuda by plugging Rainy Lure Modules into local PokéStops or by completing the “Catch 15 Water-type Pokémon” Field Research tasks.
I highly recommend using a Pinap Berry every time you encounter one. You will need to collect 50 Arrokuda Candy to evolve it into the incredibly fast Barraskewda!
