For years, building your legacy in NBA 2K meant doing it mostly on your own. You could spend hours upgrading your player, working through storylines, and grinding for virtual currency, but playing that actual career journey with a friend was not an option.

If you wanted to team up with friends, you had to leave MyCAREER and head into The City, wait for park courts, or jump into The REC.

That changes with NBA 2K27. For the first time, the franchise introduces Co-Op MyCAREER, letting you bring a friend directly into your main career journey so you can run plays, execute offensive schemes, and chase NBA success together.

What is MyCAREER Co-Op in NBA 2K27?

NBA 2K27 Co-Op MyCAREER is not a separate arcade-style mode hidden inside an online hub. Instead, it is built directly into your main save file alongside the cinematic 11-chapter “Fire & Concrete” story and the new MyCAREER Eras.

The new “Fire & Concrete” campaign is more than twice the length of NBA 2K26’s story. Your journey begins as a highly regarded high school prospect committed to Duke, but a serious car accident suddenly puts your basketball future at risk.

Two years later, the story picks back up in New York City, where the newly recreated Rucker Park becomes your first major test. Throughout this modern-day journey, your cousin Cam—voiced and mocapped by rapper Vince Staples—stays by your side from the streets of New York through your NBA career and plays an important role in your life away from basketball.

Your performance during the prelude directly affects your NBA Draft outcome. Rather than being locked into a predetermined draft position, you can climb the draft board and earn the No. 1 overall pick, such as landing with the Washington Wizards, or manually choose your preferred franchise.

Once you complete your rookie-year story, you unlock eight new Key Game sets during your second season. Each set covers half a season through six narrative-driven games and helps you progress through a 40-level reward track.

Co-Op Also Works With MyCAREER Eras

You can also step away from the modern-day storyline and play through MyCAREER Eras, with Co-Op woven into the experience.

Built on the foundation of MyNBA Eras, this mode lets you begin your career in one of five historical periods:

  • The Magic vs. Bird Era (1984): Enter the NBA just as Michael Jordan arrives in Chicago.
  • The Jordan Era (1991): Start as the Bulls begin their historic first three-peat.
  • The Kobe Era (2003): Join the league alongside LeBron James and one of its most celebrated draft classes.
  • The LeBron Era (2010): Play during the rise of superteams that reshaped the league.
  • The Steph Era (2016): Enter during the 3-point revolution that fundamentally changed basketball.

These historical Eras feature locked rosters, period-accurate rules, and historic trades. They also come with era-specific presentation, including wooden lockers, metal chairs, and CRT televisions in locker rooms, along with retro broadcast filters, HUDs, and score bugs.

Completing Eras Moments also rewards you with exclusive cosmetics through a 40-level reward track.

Rather than replacing your single-player experience, Co-Op works as a companion layer across both MyCAREER experiences and centers around a new character: your Running Mate, Trace Miller.

  • Dual-threat dynamic: When your friend joins your session, they take direct control of Trace on the court.
  • Game-by-game flexibility: You are never forced to stay in co-op. When your friend logs off, the AI automatically takes over Trace so your season progress continues without interruption.
  • Shared story moments: When you play together, both players can view and experience all the MyCAREER story cutscenes side by side.

How to Unlock and Play Co-Op in NBA 2K27

You cannot simply turn on Co-Op from the main menu from the beginning of your career. Since Trace Miller is introduced naturally through the storyline, you first need to progress through your career and unlock him.

1. Start the “Fire & Concrete” storyline

Begin your journey as a top high school prospect and work through the opening chapters alongside your cousin Cam, who is voiced and mocapped by Vince Staples.

2. Progress to the G League

Continue through the prelude games in New York City until your player reaches the G League. This is where you officially meet your Running Mate, Trace Miller.

3. Choose Trace’s build template

Once Trace joins your journey, select one of 9 NBA star archetypes to establish his physical foundation:

  • Cade Cunningham
  • Stephen Curry
  • Luka Dončić
  • Kevin Durant
  • Anthony Edwards

4. Upgrade your Running Mate

As you continue playing games, use earned progression points to improve Trace’s attributes, Badges, playstyle, and special Running Mate skills.

These upgrades are designed to complement your own MyPLAYER and also unlock new Running Mate play calls, giving the two of you more customized ways to attack opposing defenses together.

The story also focuses heavily on the relationship between you and Trace as the two of you compete for starting roles and build your off-court brands as a duo.

5. Send the online invite

Open your in-game menu, invite an online friend who owns NBA 2K27, and head into your next scheduled game together.

Do Both Players Earn VC and Season XP in Co-Op?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of Co-Op MyCAREER is the way rewards are handled.

Both players earn their own separate, full amounts of VC and Season XP.

Your friend controlling Trace does not reduce your earnings, and neither player has to split a shared reward pool. Completing games with strong teammate grades, executing clean plays, and putting up strong box-score statistics can help maximize the individual payouts for both accounts.

Account Security & Currency Rules: Even though both players earn full rewards, VC cannot be gifted, traded, or pooled between accounts, and it cannot be carried over from previous NBA 2K editions. 2K Support officially confirmed that VC cannot be moved between different entries in the series, such as from NBA 2K26 to NBA 2K27. All earnings remain tied to each individual user profile.

Platform Requirements and Crossplay Rules

Before you plan your co-op sessions, make sure you and your friend meet the required hardware and network conditions.

  • Online only: Co-Op MyCAREER is strictly an online multiplayer feature. There is no local split-screen mode, so your teammate needs to own their own copy of NBA 2K27.
  • Console crossplay: Crossplay is supported exclusively between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Platform restrictions: PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch 2 do not support crossplay. PC players can only play with other PC users, while Switch 2 players can only team up with other Switch 2 users. This is different from the MyTEAM Auction House, which shares a pool across consoles while keeping crossplay strictly limited to current-gen Xbox and PlayStation.
  • Early access timing: To play co-op during early access on August 26, 2026, both players must own the Deluxe ($99.99) or Ultra ($149.99) Edition. Otherwise, standard Co-Op MyCAREER becomes available at the global launch on September 4, 2026. Nintendo Switch 2 does not offer Deluxe or Ultra early-access versions, so all Switch 2 players begin at the global launch on September 4 regardless.
