Stuck on the Titan in Deltarune Chapter 4? Learn how to build TP, use Brighten and Unleash, survive each attack phase, handle regeneration, and finish the fight.
That frustration is real. Players have repeatedly complained about having to replay that section, especially when leaving the game means doing the climb again. And once you finally reach the Titan, the fight gives you very little room for mistakes.

The Titan has 21,000 HP, and the battle combines Darkness, TP management, a shield mechanic, and increasingly difficult bullet-hell attacks. It isn’t a fight where you can simply keep attacking and hope your stats carry you through.
The trick is understanding the rhythm of the battle.
Survive → use Brighten → collect COURAGE → build TP → Unleash → attack during the damage window.
Once that loop clicks, the Titan becomes much easier to handle.
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for the fight, survive its hardest attacks, manage your TP, and finish the final phases without throwing away another attempt.
Get Your Healing and Gear Ready First
Before you step into the Old Church Fountain arena, check your inventory.
The Titan hits hard, so having enough healing and revival options can make a huge difference. You don’t want to reach a good attack window and lose the run simply because you ran out of supplies.
Bring the Right Healing Items
- Scarlixirs: Stockpile these before the fight. They restore 160 HP to Kris, Susie, or Ralsei. You can get them from the Old Man, obtain them from Mizzles through Embezzle, find them around the Dark Sanctuaries, and they can also appear after losing to the Titan twice.
- Tension Bits: Keep these available for emergency TP. A TensionBit restores 32% TP, and TP-restoring items remain useful during Darkness because their TP gain is not reduced by the Darkness effect.
- ReviveMints: These fully restore a DOWNed ally to full HP. Mizzles can also provide them through Embezzle in Chapter 4, allowing you to stock up before the fight.
Tip: If you keep reaching the Titan with plenty of offensive options but not enough healing, change your inventory. Staying alive is more valuable than carrying one more damage item you never get to use.
Equip Gear That Helps You Survive or Deal Damage
- Lode Stones: These can increase TP gained from grazing by 5%. Equip one to a character you rely on during projectile-heavy sections if you have one.
- Blue Ribbon: This increases outgoing healing effectiveness by 12.5%. It can be useful on Ralsei or another healer-focused character, although its healing bonus does not increase Scarlixir healing for Kris, Susie, or Ralsei during Chapter 4.
- JusticeAxe: This is Susie’s +12 AT weapon, obtained through the Chapter 4 Hammer of Justice fight. If you have it, it gives Susie a stronger offensive option against the Titan.
- BlackShard: If you completed the Chapter 3 Knight fight, Kris can equip the BlackShard. Against the Titan, it gives Kris a major damage boost, with 3× normal damage while the shield is up and 10× while it is down.
- Shadow Mantle: If you completed Chapter 3’s Sword Route, the Shadow Mantle can be equipped to Kris, Susie, or Ralsei. Titan attacks deal 50% less damage to the wearer.
2. Don’t Try to Brute-Force the Titan
The biggest mistake is treating this like a normal boss fight.
Your goal is not to attack every turn.
Your goal is to survive long enough to collect COURAGE, build your TP to 80%, use Unleash, and then make the most of the Titan’s weakened state.
Think of the battle as a loop:
Survive → Brighten → collect COURAGE → build 80% TP → Unleash → attack → repeat.
Turn 1: Start With a Safe Opening
A common community strategy is to have everyone Defend on the first turn.
This gives each character TP even during Darkness, although it only gives 2% TP per character, so it isn’t mandatory. Think of it as a safe opener that gives you a little breathing room before the main TP-building cycle begins.
After Turn 1: Start Using Brighten
Use Brighten when you need it for the incoming projectile patterns.
Brighten costs 4% TP and expands the light radius around the SOUL. That larger light radius lets you purify incoming projectiles from farther away, making it easier to collect COURAGE and build your TP.
The important thing is not to think of Brighten as a way to shrink projectiles.
It doesn’t.
Its real value is giving you a larger area of light to work with during the Darkness sections.
Your main cycle is:
Brighten → purify projectiles → collect COURAGE → build TP → reach 80% → Unleash.
How COURAGE Helps You Reach 80% TP
The TP you gain from COURAGE changes depending on how long it has been since your last Unleash:
- 0–3 turns: 1.6% TP per COURAGE
- 4 turns: 2.4%
- 5–6 turns: 3.2%
- 7+ turns: 4.8%
There is also a hidden loss-based bonus. After 8 deaths, COURAGE gives 1.2× the normal TP, increasing by 0.1× per death until reaching 2× at 15 deaths.
So if you’ve already died several times, don’t assume those attempts were completely wasted. The fight can become more forgiving by making TP generation easier.
3. Learn the Titan’s Attack Patterns
The Titan’s attacks get harder as the battle progresses, but they follow recognizable patterns.
The first three shield-up phases cycle through Swarm, Centipedes, and The Hands, followed by harder versions and increasingly dangerous Big Shots attacks.
You don’t need perfect reflexes from the first attempt. What you need is familiarity.
Once you know what is coming, you can stop panicking and start positioning for it.
Red Swarms: Keep Moving and Leave Yourself Space
The Swarm attack fills the board with Titan Spawn that slowly chase the SOUL.
Stay mobile and avoid getting trapped against the edge of the board. Move toward open space as the Spawn close in and use your light to clear nearby threats.
The goal is simple: always leave yourself somewhere to move next.
Centipedes: Use the Light to Clear Them
The Titan can summon large centipedes that circle the board and periodically rush toward the SOUL.
Their segments can be purified, while purifying the head can clear the entire centipede and generate a large amount of COURAGE. Smaller centipedes can also appear and move directly toward you.
Don’t overreact to their movement. Keep the SOUL controlled, use your available light radius, and collect COURAGE when the path is safe.
Hands: Survive First
The Hands attack places huge hands on both sides of the board. They close toward the center and then retract, leaving bullets behind.
The fingers can be purified when they move into the SOUL’s light. Breaking all four fingers on one hand causes that hand to explode and prevents it from spawning additional bullets for the rest of the attack.
This is also a good time to think about healing instead of greed.
If your party is already hurt, stay alive. There is no value in chasing a little extra TP if it costs you the entire attempt.
Big Shots: Focus on Positioning
Once the Titan’s shield has been removed, Big Shots enter the fight.
Titan Spawn continue moving around the board while the Titan charges and fires large shots of darkness at the SOUL. These cannot be purified, so this section is about positioning and survival.
Later versions can fire more shots, charge faster, or use tighter bursts, so learning the pattern becomes increasingly important.
Desperation Shots: Watch for the Laser
During the sixth phase, the Titan begins with Desperation Shots, firing repeated bursts around the SOUL.
After 12 bursts, it pulls the remaining shots back toward itself and fires a gigantic laser.
When you see the laser, hug the top or bottom of the board to avoid it.
Don’t panic-move. The more chaotic the attack looks, the more important it is to keep your movement controlled.
4. Reach 80% TP, Then Make It Count
Once your TP reaches 80%, it’s time to stop thinking about survival-only play and switch into damage mode.
Unleash costs 80% TP and drops the Titan’s shield for two turns, dramatically reducing its defenses. If the shield is already down, using Unleash does nothing.
Step 1: Build Your TP to 80%
Before spending your TP, make sure your party is healthy enough to use the damage window.
Reaching 80% TP is only useful if you can actually survive long enough to take advantage of it.
Step 2: Use Unleash With Kris
Open Kris’s ACT menu and choose Unleash.
The Titan’s shield drops, giving you a short opportunity to deal much more damage.
Step 3: Attack While the Shield Is Down
Now FIGHT.
The Titan normally reduces incoming damage to 50% while shielded, while attacks deal 5× damage when the shield is down. With BlackShard, Kris gets an even stronger Titan-specific damage multiplier.
During the first two Unleash cycles, Susie and Ralsei can attack on the same turn that Kris uses Unleash, giving you another opportunity to capitalize on the opening.
Step 4: Prepare for the Shield to Return
After the first and second Unleash cycles, the Titan’s shield eventually returns.
When it does, don’t improvise a completely new strategy.
Go right back to:
Brighten → collect COURAGE → build 80% TP → Unleash → attack.
That rhythm is the heart of the fight.
How Many Times Do You Need to Unleash?
This is one of the most common points of confusion.
Under the normal phase progression, you use Unleash three times while the Titan’s shield is up.
The first two uses lead into another shield phase. After the third successful Unleash, the shield remains down until the Titan reaches 50% HP.
So remember it like this:
Unleash #1 → shield returns
Unleash #2 → shield returns
Unleash #3 → shield stays down
Once you reach that third Unleash, keep attacking and push the Titan toward 50% HP.
Stuck? The Fight Gives You Some Help
Still getting destroyed?
That’s fine. There are a few built-in mechanics that can make repeated attempts more forgiving.
Your Deaths Can Increase TP Gain
After 8 losses, the amount of TP gained from COURAGE increases to 1.2× normal.
The multiplier continues rising with additional losses until it reaches 2× at 15 deaths.
So if you’re stuck, repeated attempts can eventually make the TP-building portion of the fight easier.
More Healing Can Appear After Repeated Losses
After the party loses to the Titan twice, Scarlixir and Rhapsotea appear in chests.
Each additional loss can add another Rhapsotea chest, up to a maximum of five Rhapsotea chests.
Before your next attempt, check your supplies. You may have more healing available than you realize.
The Slow “Cheese” Route
There is another approach if the later bullet-hell phases are giving you trouble:
Don’t use Unleash.
Without Unleash, the battle remains in its first phase instead of advancing through the later, harder attack phases. You can slowly chip away at the Titan through its shield while avoiding some of the later Big Shots and Desperation Shots patterns.
The trade-off is obvious: it is very slow because the shield heavily reduces normal damage.
Once the Titan reaches 50% HP, the normal regeneration sequence begins anyway.
So this is a survival option, not the fast way through the fight.
7. What Happens When the Titan Regenerates?
This is the moment where a lot of players think they’ve messed something up.
You haven’t.
Once the Titan reaches 50% HP or lower, any DOWNed party members are revived, and the Titan covers its face with its wings. It then spends four turns absorbing Titan Spawn to regenerate.
During this covered state, your attacks deal only 0.1× damage.
The Titan regenerates:
- 3,150 HP on turn one
- 3,150 HP on turn two
- 3,150 HP on turn three
- 10,500 HP on turn four
At the end of the fourth turn, the Titan uncovers itself and its shield is restored.
Don’t panic when the HP starts going back up. This is part of the fight, not a failed attempt.
Don’t waste your strongest resources trying to brute-force through this healing phase. Focus on surviving and get ready for what comes next.
8. Finish the Final Phase With DualBuster
After the regeneration sequence, the Old Man throws his hammer at the Titan’s shield, cracking it, and temporarily joins the party.
This unlocks DualBuster, allowing Susie and the Old Man to fire simultaneous attacks at the Titan.
Each projectile deals roughly 1,950–2,050 damage, regardless of stats, and the attack can be strengthened with the timing prompt.
Step 1: Use DualBuster
Use DualBuster as soon as it becomes available.
If you delay it, the Titan can continue attacking until you use the ACT.
Step 2: Use DualBuster Again
After the first DualBuster, use it one more time.
Step 3: Finish With Susie’s Idea
After the second DualBuster, Susie’s Idea replaces it.
Select Susie’s Idea.
A throwing prompt appears, but the scripted sequence has Susie grab Kris and jump into the Titan, ending the fight from the inside.
Susie’s Idea is what actually finishes the encounter.
You cannot simply reduce the Titan to 0 HP through normal attacks during this final sequence. Even if you bring it down to 1% HP, the fight will not end until Susie’s Idea is used.
9. Playing Pacifist? Don’t Panic About This Fight
If you’re following a Pacifist-style route, seeing the Titan’s Mercy option crossed out can be alarming.
Take a breath.
The Titan cannot be spared, and the encounter has to be progressed through combat. The game explains why: the Titan has no consciousness and does not understand MERCY.
So yes, you have to attack the Titan to progress through the encounter.
That doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly ruined your run. The Titan is not handled like an ordinary recruitable Darkner, while Chapter 4’s route progression is primarily tied to recruiting the chapter’s Darkners.
Can You Beat the Titan Without Attacking?
No.
The Titan encounter requires violence to progress.
So if you’ve been worrying that using FIGHT against this boss has ruined your route, you can stop worrying about that specific concern.
What About the Roaring Knight?
The Roaring Knight is another encounter that cannot be normally spared. The Knight is Chapter 3’s final boss and a separate route-related encounter, so defeating it and fighting the Titan are not the same thing as deliberately defeating ordinary recruitable Darkners.
You don’t need to abandon your run simply because the game forced you into a boss fight.
10. How Long Does the Titan Fight Take?
There is no fixed boss-fight duration.
Your total time depends on how quickly you collect COURAGE, how efficiently you manage TP, which equipment you use, how much damage you deal during shield-down windows, and how many attempts you need to learn the attack patterns.
The commonly discussed 15-minute frustration refers to the climbing sequence and cutscene before the fight, not a fixed 15-minute Titan battle.
And because repeated attempts can mean replaying that climb after leaving the game, the total time you spend getting the win can be much longer.
11. The Titan Strategy to Remember
Once the fight finally clicks, it stops feeling like one giant wall of bullets.
Think about the fight in this order:
1. Defend on the opening turn if you want the safe community opener.
2. Use Brighten to expand your SOUL’s light radius.
3. Purify incoming projectiles and collect COURAGE.
4. Build your TP to 80%.
5. Use Unleash with Kris.
6. Attack while the shield is down.
7. Heal when survival becomes more important than one extra attack.
8. Repeat the cycle through the first shield phases.
9. After the third successful Unleash, keep attacking until the Titan reaches 50% HP.
10. Survive the four-turn regeneration sequence.
11. Use DualBuster twice.
12. Use Susie’s Idea to finish the fight.
That’s the entire encounter in one loop.
12. Titan Fight FAQs
How much health does the Titan have?
The Titan has 21,000 HP. Its effective durability changes throughout the fight because its shield and other damage modifiers affect how much damage your attacks actually deal.
How many times do you have to Unleash the Titan?
Under the normal phase progression, you use Unleash three times while the shield is up. After the third successful Unleash, the shield stays down until the Titan reaches 50% HP.
Why is the Titan taking so little damage?
The Titan’s shield heavily reduces incoming damage. Normal attacks deal only 50% damage while the shield is up, while attacks become much more effective after Unleash drops the shield. BlackShard gives Kris a special damage multiplier against the Titan.
How do you get 80% TP against the Titan?
Use Brighten to expand the SOUL’s light radius, then purify incoming projectiles and collect COURAGE. COURAGE is the main TP source during the Darkness sections.
What does Brighten do against the Titan?
Brighten costs 4% TP and expands the light around the SOUL, allowing you to purify attacks from farther away.
What should you do when the Titan regenerates?
Once the Titan reaches 50% HP or lower, it enters a scripted four-turn regeneration sequence. Focus on surviving that sequence rather than trying to burn through the healing. The Old Man then cracks the shield and joins the party.
Does dying make the Titan easier?
Yes, in one important way. After 8 deaths, COURAGE begins giving increased TP, with the multiplier reaching 2× after 15 deaths. Additional healing supplies can also appear after repeated losses.
Can you Spare the Titan?
No. The Titan cannot be spared and must be progressed through combat.
Can you beat the Titan without attacking?
No. The Titan encounter requires violence to progress.
Will fighting the Titan ruin a Pacifist route?
The mandatory Titan fight is not the same as intentionally defeating ordinary recruitable Darkners. The Titan itself cannot be spared, so fighting it is part of progressing through Chapter 4.
Final Thoughts: You’re Closer Than You Think
The Titan is the kind of boss that can make you think you’re doing everything wrong.
You’re dealing with Darkness, bullet-hell attacks, TP management, a regenerating shield, multiple phases, and 21,000 HP all at once.
But you don’t need to overpower it.
You need to understand the rhythm.
Build COURAGE, use Brighten to make the projectile sections manageable, reach 80% TP, use Unleash, and make every shield-down window count.
When the shield comes back, start the loop again.
When the Titan regenerates at 50% HP, don’t panic.
And when Mercy refuses to help, remember that this is one boss you are supposed to fight.
Keep your movement controlled, manage your resources, learn the patterns, and take the fight one phase at a time.
Stay determined.
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ve just died for the fifth time and you’re already thinking about that 15-minute climbing sequence and cutscene you’ll have to go through again.
Survive > Use Brighten > Collect COURAGE > Build TP > Unleash > Attack During The Damage Window.

A common community strategy is to have everyone Defend on the first turn.
This gives each character TP even during Darkness, although it only gives 2% TP per character, so it isn’t mandatory. Think of it as a safe opener that gives you a little breathing room before the main TP-building cycle begins.
After Turn 1: Start Using Brighten
Use Brighten when you need it for the incoming projectile patterns.
Brighten costs 4% TP and expands the light radius around the SOUL. That larger light radius lets you purify incoming projectiles from farther away, making it easier to collect COURAGE and build your TP.

It doesn’t.
Its real value is giving you a larger area of light to work with during the Darkness sections.
Your main cycle is:

Reach 80% TP, Then Make It Count

Don’t panic when the HP starts going back up. This is part of the fight, not a failed attempt.
Don’t waste your strongest resources trying to brute-force through this healing phase. Focus on surviving and get ready for what comes next.

Playing Pacifist? Don’t Panic About This Fight

Can You Beat the Titan Without Attacking?
No.
The Titan encounter requires violence to progress.
So if you’ve been worrying that using FIGHT against this boss has ruined your route, you can stop worrying about that specific concern.
What About the Roaring Knight?

How Long Does the Titan Fight Take?
There is no fixed boss-fight duration.
Your total time depends on how quickly you collect COURAGE, how efficiently you manage TP, which equipment you use, how much damage you deal during shield-down windows, and how many attempts you need to learn the attack patterns.
The commonly discussed 15-minute frustration refers to the climbing sequence and cutscene before the fight, not a fixed 15-minute Titan battle.
And because repeated attempts can mean replaying that climb after leaving the game, the total time you spend getting the win can be much longer.
